Screenwriters Hired For The Monster Squad Remake

In March it wasannouncedthatMichael Bay’s Platinum Duneswas developing a remake ofFred Dekker’s 1987 movieThe Monster Squad, written by Dekker andShane Black. Producers Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Andrew Form, and Rob Cohen have been meeting with writers, and have finally hired someone to pen the remake.Heatvisionalso reveals that the plan is to turn the family-oriented property into a potential franchise.

Dunes has hired cousin screenwriting teamMarkandBrian Gunn, writers of MTV’s television movie2getherand the television series it spawned, the writers behind James Gunn’sPG Pornand the direct to DVD sequelBring it On Again. They are also attached to the Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel and an in-development big screen adaptation ofMighty Mouse.

A lot of people love to bash the Platinum Dunes remakes, but I’ve always said that all they need are better screenplays, and a better casting director. The resume of Mark and Brian Gunn is not to convince me that they are trying to improve the quality of their screenplays. We’ll see… Rob Cohen will direct the film, which sounds like a horrible idea. Nothing good can come of this.

Previously:

The original film was based on a pretty simple idea: what if a group of friends had to face down a group of classic Universal monsters come to life? Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the Wolf Man (“Wolf Man’s got nards!"), the Mummy and the Creature from the Black Lagoon were the monsters, and they were taken down with a blend of humor and genuine enthusiasm for classic monster movies that had fans clamoring for the movie on DVD. (The long-overdue release finally hit shelves in October of 2007; a blu-ray disc followed last November.)

Here’s the trailer for the original:
