Newly Titled ‘Project Almanac’ Moves To January 2015

Project Almanac, the found-footage time travel film formerly calledAlmanacandWelcome to Yesterday, has been given a new release window. Paramount announced the film, directed byDean Israeliteand produced byMichael Bay, will now be released in January 2015,almost a year afterits original February 2014 release date. The Hollywood Reporterdropped the news.

“Project Almanac” refers to the name of the project that allows four high school students to time travel. (The name itself is a reference toBack to the Future Part II, as written byJason PaganandAndrew Stark.) In the film, a brother and sister find an old chest in their attic that was owned by their father. This is Project Almanac and the pair recruit their friends and take time travel for a teen-fueled ride. Here’s the trailer with the old title:

When Paramount first delayedProject Almanac, the reason given was Michael Bay himself wanted to tinker with the film. Now, with a release set six months afterTransformers: Age of Extinctionhits theaters, that seems even more likely. It’ll also give Paramount time to market to a younger audience, as the film – described asChroniclemeetsPrimer– has a very broad appeal.

In a few months, you may read about my visit to the set of the film then calledAlmanac. We spoke to all the principal actors, writers, producer and director to find out how Platinum Dunes' first foray into the world of micro-budget genre filmmaking was looking. What we found was a very logical, interesting and angsty take on found footage and time travel. This was definitely not the heavilyBack to the Future Part IIinfluenced plot originally rumored.

We got to see exactly how a group of teenage kids would use time travel. They wouldn’t travel back in time to stop a terrible event. No, they’d travel back a day or two to go to a concert they missed and to try and win the girl of their dreams (And buy cars, and get revenge, and pass tests, etc.) You see it above. But, of course, things don’t go as planned.
