‘Goon: Last Of The Enforcers’ Comes Out Next March In Canada
It stings me to write this, but one ofmy most anticipatedmovies of 2016,Goon: Last of the Enforcers, isn’t coming out until next year. The good news is, we finally know when theJay Baruchel-directed sequel is coming out, or at least when it’s coming out in Canada. Next March is when our fine neighbors to the North will witnessGoon: Last of the Enforcers.

Jay Baruchel, who produced, co-wrote, and co-starred in the wonderfulGoon, co-wrote the sequel withJesse Chabot. The actor makes his feature directorial debut withGoon: Last of the Enforcers, which opens in Canada onMarch 17th, 2017. Baruchel announced the release date onTwitter:
That’s one of the few photos we’ve seen fromGoon: Last of the Enforcers. The sequel reunites, as you’re able to tell from above, the friendly goon Doug Glatt (Sean William Scott) and the retired enforcer Ross Rhea (Liev Schreiber). Baruchel’s film picks up a few years after the events ofGoon, and at the beginning of the sequel, Doug has joined Ross in retirement. The simple man is now an insurance salesman married to Eva (Alison Pill), but he’s called back to the ice one more time by the Halifax Highlanders.

This is about an age that’s drawing to a close. It’s a role, the goon, that’s going out of fashion. It was the stuff of talking heads when we made the first movie, about whether or not these guys have a place and how much of a place they should have. This is even more so now. It’s timed out perfectly to what we wanted to say about Doug’s (Seann William Scott) career. If we do our jobs telling the story right, then Doug is the prototype and represents a bygone era. He’s the last cowboy during The Depression, sort of thing. That’s the goal of the story we’re trying to tell.
The director has also talked about some next-level stuff from the hockey sequences in the film. Baruchel praisedMichael Dowse’sGoonfor having “the best hockey that’s ever been photographed in a movie,” but according to him,Goon: Last of the Enforcerswill “shred it and everything else.”
The sequel features some new additions to the cast, includingT.J. Miller(Silicon Valley),Wyatt Russell(Everybody Wants Some) andElisha Cuthbert. Cuthbert, who’s great with comedy (Happy Endings) and is married to hockey player Dion Phaneuf, plays Eva’s sister, while Russell is one of the many new players to join the Halifax Highlanders.
Although it’d be preferable ifGoon: Last of the Enforcerscame out, let’s say, tomorrow instead of next year, we now know an early 2017 release date is possible for the sequel, at least for those us in the states; the firstGoonhad a domestic release a month after opening in Canada. And for those of you lucky enough to live in Canada, it looks like you now have some pretty good plans forMarch 17th, 2017.
