On the film side,Carolled the 2016 Golden Globe nominations with five, followed bySteve Jobs,The Revenant, andThe Big Shortwith four each. But the field looks even more interesting outside of the heavy-hitters.The Hateful Eight,The Martian, andJoy, all of which were shut out of the SAG Awards nominations yesterday, fared much better today.Alicia Vikandergot the expected nod forThe Danish Girl, but also an unexpected one forEx Machina. Maybe best of all,Mad Max: Fury Roadis now in the running for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director.

But not everyone got great news this morning.Creedscored a lone nomination forSylvester Stallone, whileStraight Outta Comptonwas snubbed completely.Spotlightgot some love, but its actors didn’t –Mark Ruffalodid get nominated, but it was forInfinitely Polar Bear. And the HFPA resisted the temptation to rewardJohnny Deppfor his lizard-like turn as Whitey Bulger inBlack Mass. (This from the same body that nominated him forThe Touristfive years ago.)

Moving on to TV, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association apparentlylovesstreaming, handing out nominations to Hulu’sCasual, Amazon’sMozart in the Jungle, and last year’s big winnerTransparent. And they’re unafraid of the new.Mr. Robotwas one of the strongest freshman series with three nominations, whileRachel Bloomwas recognized forCrazy Ex-GirlfriendandRob LoweforThe Grinder. They do not, however, care for superheroes;DaredevilandJessica Joneswent ignored.
